[Mesquitelist] characters as labels on cladogram branches

Do you mean labeling like that shown in the first image of the MacClade home page:
http://macclade.org/ ?
Mesquite does not have that function.
For individual characters, you can label the reconstructed states at nodes when Trace Character History is active, by selecting Show Labels For States in the Trace menu.
