[Mesquitelist] Mesquite suitability

Hi all

I've been reading about Mesquite today (linked to here via Mx), and am 
quite impressed with the flexible framework and modules that are available.
Working in a marine research institute,  I am trying to find/develop a 
software that will allow our scientists to track specimens and 
collections. This information should be tied into geographic, taxonomy, 
project, images, habitats, substrate, etc data. Hopefully in the long 
run data analyses will be performed on these data from within the 
application.

Do you think Mesquite would be a suitable platform to extend to cater 
for this kind of information? How difficult would it be (I'm able to 
code / contribute)?

I think that the closest commercial application (so far) for what I am 
looking for is Biota
(http://viceroy.eeb.uconn.edu/Biota).
