[Mesquitelist] New to Mesquite

Dear List Members

I am new to mesquite, and I have entered data into character matrices for
several different taxa.  I have continuous morphological measurements,
continuous ratios, and discrete character states for each taxon. It amounts
to 5 different character matrices. How do I construct a good consensus tree
from all of them? The trees I keep getting are putting an obvious outgroup
within the most densely populated branches. Also, when I chose to only
have 8 characters in one matrix, it deleted 7 of my characters in another.
Why is that?
